Whingate Primary School

Intent

At Whingate Primary School we believe that it is important that children are given the opportunity to explore a Design and Technology curriculum with a resilient and resourceful approach, whilst being taught to reflect upon their own learning. Our Design and Technology curriculum will inspire children to succeed through a broad range of practical activities and learning opportunities which encourage them to identify problems and take risks to create solutions. Children will be motivated to become innovative designers and have an ambitious attitude towards the wider world, whilst adopting skills from our Whingate Superheroes.

Implementation

Our curriculum aims are at the centre of a series of clearly structured projects which enable children, from all backgrounds, with all abilities and additional needs, to flourish and thrive in a creative environment. Progressive skills are taught explicitly throughout school, along-side the appropriate health and safety knowledge which is required. There is a specific focus on the ‘Live Healthily’ strand of our curriculum aims, where each year group will cover a food and nutrition based topic. This is in addition to the other special events and assemblies.

Our Design and Technology curriculum provides experiences to encourage children to gain life skills, develop their imagination and link this to the wider world. Children follow their learning journey, which may use Design and Technology as a main subject driver, or as an opportunity for cross-curricular links to apply skills they have learned. This is achieved through a practical, hands-on approach to teaching and learning.

Children’s work is celebrated through wall displays and Design and Technology books, this shows a progression of skills across school. Children take pride in their work and have the opportunity to share this with the subject leader. A wide range of resources are provided to ensure that children have a rich and practical approach to the subject. Vocabulary has a strong focus through the planning and teaching of each lesson.

Impact

Through the teaching of this subject, children will adopt skills similar to our Whingate Superheroes and implement them across the curriculum. Children’s knowledge of the wider world will develop and their confidence and ambition will grow. Their skill set will be built on each year and can be applied to many aspects of life both in and out of the school environment.

Staff CPD 2021-22

Staff have had some staff meeting time this year to develop the teaching structure for DT.

CPD Knowledge Organisers

Staff have attended a staff meeting to start using knowledge organisers from Spring Term 2. These will help children with their knowledge, ensuring it sticks and they have the vocabulary to understand the unit. In older year groups in school children add the definitions as they learn them.

DT Enterprise Project 2022

As a way to develop DT across school this year we have decided to launch a DT Enterprise Project. Children from years 1-6 will be working towards making products to have on their class stall. Children can showcase their DT learning to their family and friends.
