Whingate Primary School P.E Curriculum
P.E at Whingate
Our curriculum aims to promote the importance of leading a healthy and active lifestyle in a fun and engaging way. Children learn that being active is an essential part of staying healthy, not only physically but mentally too. We are able to offer a wide variety of activities both in and out of curriculum time, ensuring that children have the best opportunities to develop a range of skills throughout their time with us at Whingate. Our high quality curriculum focuses on developing skills rather than sport-specific units of work. This way, children are able to access and succeed in participating in a wider range of sports and leave Whingate as confident movers.
ACES Education
To support our physical education in school, we will be working closely alongside ACES (Active Community Engagement in Sport) who are specialists in the teaching and delivering of PE. Across 2019/2020 ACES will be working with us to improve the provision of PE and sports for all, to ensure the quality of teaching and learning is of the best standard possible.
Facilities
We have one large sports hall, a large field and 2 playgrounds which are used for the teaching of PE and after school clubs. In 2017 we celebrated the opening of our ‘Myers’ Mile’ to allow children to improve their physical fitness by increasing the amount of time they spend being active each day. The Myers’ Mile is used weekly during outdoor PE sessions and for termly competitions to encourage engagement for all. In order to further extend the pupils’ choice of activities, we also have a Trim Trail available for KS2 pupils to use during break times and lunch times.
Government Sports Grant
The introduction of the Sports Grant which began in 2013 benefits schools by approximately £9000 a year has made a signification contribution to PE at Whingate. The Sports Premium Funding has been utilised to develop many areas of physical Education, boosting staff confidence through more CPD opportunities as well as funding external coaches to support teaching and learning in school for extended periods of time.
